Russ, it's called Geocaching and there's already a huge community for it - http://www.geocaching.com/
Also, there's an iPhone app that links back to geocaching.com to track all the cache's you've found, the ones nearby, etc. It's a lot of fun (and the app is cheaper than buying a new GPSr!)
